Rebuilding that old deck with new Decking and Railings to Give it a New Lease on Life

New and past clients will reach out us from Fairfield County CT neighborhoods in Riverside, Belle Haven, Old Greenwich, New Canaan, and Darien to design and build new or remodel older existing decks that have been suffering from wood rot, mildew, loose nails, ledger board improperly installed without flashing, broken railings, decking boards that are splitting, cracking, warping just to name a few.

Now your home’s porch, balcony or deck might be free-standing, curved, attached, detached, raised with stairs, have a pergola, be multi-level, built around a hot tub/pool or wrap around your property.  So if you are thinking about repairing, remodeling or building a totally brand new design, here are few deck planning ideas to think about. What is your budget and what type of materials do you want it made from, and what features would you like have?

Decking materials

When designing an outdoor deck, one of the biggest decisions you will have to make is what material do you want your deck to be. Decks can be constructed from using a variety of materials, natural woods (Cedar, Redwood), pressure treated (Yellow Pine), exotic hardwoods (Ipe, Tigerwood, Mahogany), PVC (Fiberon), and composite (Azek, Trex). Obviously, there are pros and cons for using each type of material.  When thinking about your deck remodeling project a few things should be taken into account; such as the look, the cost of materials (per square foot), the amount maintenance required, and the projected life span of it. For this blog post, I want to focus on the two most popular decking materials that our customers have been choosing which are the exotic hardwood Ipe and the composite Azek.

Exotic hardwood Ipe

ironwoodSo exotic hardwoods such was Ipe (pronounced “eee-pay”) is native to Brazil, also called “Brazilian Walnut” is 8 times denser than oak, which is so hard it does even float, so naturally high in tannic acid resin that its highly resistant to insects, rot, abrasion and fading from the sun. And because it has such a tight grain, it does not splinter. With proper maintenance, it can have a 40-plus-year life span. It is more expensive than traditional wood such as Cedar, but will save you more money in the long run; it’s a sound investment. We recommend putting a stain on it every two years, but some customers choose to keep it natural. Here are the main benefits compared to traditional woods:

Unparalleled Beauty- The distinctive grains and colors that are found in Ipe exotic hardwoods are impossible to beat. Regardless of the look desired, contemporary, rustic, or distinctive – there is an exotic hardwood species that can accommodate your decking project

Durability- Ipe is considerably more dense and durable than any other wood decking. These woods will endure abuse from patio furniture, grills, pets, and foot traffic far better than cedar or redwood.

Quality- Ipe exotic hardwoods have very few branches. This results in a finished piece of lumber that has almost no knots, or is “clear”, as they say in the lumber industry.  In addition to the lack of knots, exotic hardwood decking is usually kiln dried, meaning each piece of decking will be more stable with less warping and or twisting.

“I don’t write reviews but I’m making an exception for Paul. He’s first rate. He recently built a beautiful ipe deck for my house. Matt FrankOn time, on budget (considerably lower than the competing bid), and beautifully done. And he’s a good guy. I’ve used him for a couple other things too and will do so again with pleasure. I recommend him highly.”

Azek Composite decking

composite-azek

azek-deckingOnce upon a time, wood was the go-to for all decking projects. That’s because nothing better existed. Today, more and more homeowners and contractors are choosing highly engineered non-wood options: capped polymer and capped composite. Azek composite decking captures the warmth of natural wood, but lasts longer, requires less maintenance, and comes with industry-leading warranties. The only real requirement is a power-washing once every two years, which comes at one-fifth the price of resealing a wood deck.

Azek composite decking is engineered with Porcell technology which means no wood filters; it has a high resistance to stain, scratches and splitting; easy to clean and can last for a lifetime. Their premium capped polymer decking, made without wood, provides unparalleled performance while boasting unrivaled design. They come in all kinds of textures, designs, and colors such as Coastline, Weathered Teak, Dark Hickory TimberTech Pecan, TimberTech Tigerwood, AZEK English Walnut, and AZEK Mahogany

Great looks: Recent advancements in composite and capped polymer decking let Azek closely mimic the rich, gorgeous color and grain patterns of natural Ipe.

Easy maintenance: Ipe can lose its original look and turn a slight silvery color if not maintained properly with staining. Azek decks only need a quick cleaning with ordinary washing.

Better warranties: Ipe warranties are generally quite limited. Azek decks have a 30-year Fade and Stain warranty, including protection from splintering, cupping and more.

Cost effective: Many Azek products are less expensive than Ipe. And that doesn’t include the costs of staining and maintaining the Ipe hardwood deck.

Features your outdoor living space can include

Built-in Benches & Bars: Perfect for relaxing with friends and family, built-in benches save you the need for additional chairs.

Railings: The right railing is the difference between a deck and an outdoor living space. If you have small children railing can be an added safety feature. There are a ton of styles, colors and options. A modern flat-top rail provides a convenient place to set cups and glasses when entertaining.

Pergola covered decks: may be used to cover a walkway or to provide filtered shade for an outdoor living space.

Built-in hot tub, Spa or Pool: A hot tub, or swim spa, is a great addition to your outdoor living space.
